A Corny Baby Surprise Jacket

Boo Sostrin BS Jacket

I love making this pattern.  After three or four tries I think I’ve finally gotten a handle on the structure of the garment so that I can make changes to it.  Elizabeth Zimmerman was a complete and total freaking genius!  I mean, she figured out how to knit this thing flat with increases and decreases so that when you fold it up it becomes a sweater.  Amazing is a woefully inadequate word to describe how cool that is.

One thing that I might do differently is to do a provisional cast on–that would leave live stitches across the back of the neck and at the end of the arms.  I wish I could say I thought of this, but alas, it was Peg.  Good work Peg!  It would also allow you to pick up stitches across the front edge of the sleeves to do a three needle bind off.  Yes.  I hate sewing things up so much that I’d go to all that trouble.

So.  This one was made in Maizy by Crystal Palace Yarns.  It’s 82% corn fiber and 18% elastic nylon.  The elastic really makes a difference as it has so much more give than other plant fiber yarns.  I wanted to kill people when I tried to knit with hemp.  I used two strands together–one in ivory and the other in cactus.  I think the effect is really nice.  The ivory gives it a very summery and fresh feeling.   Since we don’t know the gender of Baby Boo yet it is a nice gender neutral color and style (Hattie is acting as model).  I started to do a picot bind off on the collar, but decided it was a little too girly.  But that’s a good idea to do on the next one for a girl.

The first time I made this pattern I wrote out instructions for each row.  EZ is great, but she tends to be a little vague in her patterns sometimes.  Someone commented that they read more like recipes and that is so right on the money.  She writes them like I imagine my grandmother would have.  I hear her voice when I read EZ patterns.  I keep making tweaks to it and make notes about what part of the garment I’m making at any given time.  Since it is knit flat and then folded, it’s not always clear from looking at it just where one is in the process. I like to read my project as I knit along  (that’s a technique of actually looking at your project to see where you are and what you should do next in the pattern–especially good for lace and cables) and it’s really hard to do with this one.

I can’t wait to give them the sweater.  They are due any day now, if they haven’t had the baby already.  I’ve got a list of food to make to take with us when we go for a visit.  I know how much we so appreciated it when folks did that for us.  Gotta pay it forward.

On another front:  a friend sent me some Yak Yarn!  Wow.  It’s dark brown, from the Bijou Basin Ranch in Elbert, CO.  It’s one ounce and 200 yards.  8 stitches/inch on #1-#3 needles.  Gauge like that makes me laugh.  There is no way that it’s going to be the same stitches per inch on size 1 as size 3 needles. So which is it?  8/inch on #1s or on #3s?  Not sure what I’m going to do with it.  Such a very sweet gesture–but non-knitters don’t understand how much yarn is needed to make a real project.  This will need to be an accent on something else.  I’ve got some alpaca yarn–maybe I’ll put it together with that.  It’s fun to have and I love that they sent it to me!
